A clever action-puzzle platformer for desktop

Deepest Sword is a free action-puzzle video game by independent developer, Cosmic Adventure Squad, for desktop devices. It is a side-scroller that incorporates gameplay elements of puzzle-solving and physics-based, resulting in an interesting 2D platforming experience. It was actually created in 72 hours to compete in the 48th Ludum Dare Jam event.

The platforming in Deepest Sword has striking similarities with another game called, Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy. Players are also faced with various obstacles that players need to solve as they navigate their way toward the final section. What's more, the level dynamically changes with each playthrough.

Is Deepest Sword any good?

A little about the story in Deepest Sword. You are a knight out to defeat a dragon living in the Cave of Longing. You'll need to strike it in the heart to vanquish it. So far, so good ... There's a catch, though. Your sword isn't quite up to the task, length-wise. It grows with each defeat, however, adding to your chances of defeating the creature — making it easier to overcome obstacles, as well.

The controls in Deepest Sword are a no-brainer. Move left and right using the A and D keys respectively. Meanwhile, you rotate your sword using the Left and Right arrow keys. The R key is used for respawning, and lastly, do a full reset with the zero key. Your right and left mouse clicks can be used for sword rotation, too.

Deepest Sword features charming graphics in retro styling and puts a unique twist to its platforming mechanics. If there's one thing that could be a detriment to the game, it would be that is a very short game. A typical playthrough will not last you more than 10 minutes or so — a bit expected given that the game was created in less than four days, though.

An entertaining platformer with a unique twist

In summary, Deepest Sword's simple but funny premise, combined with its clever mechanic, makes for a fun, albeit short gameplay. The controls are easy, it's designed well, and is just an overall light-hearted game that anyone can play and enjoy. If you have a few minutes to spare, it is worth a playthrough.
